Upon opening Microsoft Outlook after it has crashed the error “Outlook has detected a problem with the existing NormalEmail.dotm. Would you like to create a new NormalEmail.dotm?” may appear.
NormalEmail.dotm is the default template that opens when creating a new mail message. You will want to click “Yes.” This may alter the default signature, if one is configured.
Alternatively, you could rename the file NormalEmail.dotm, and Outlook will automatically recreate the file. When renaming a file it is best to change the name to something that can easily be changed back to the original file name if a problem arises. (example: NormalEmail.dotm.old) The location for the file is as follows:
Windows 7, C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
Windows XP, C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
This solution also applies to Microsoft Word. A similar error message may appear stating “Word has detected a problem with the existing Normal.dotm. Would you like to create a new Normal.dotm?” Follow the steps from above.
